Emroidered Flowers; Pamela Watts
Original ideas for embroidery don't come along very often, because many stitchers prefer to work in traditional styles. Watts (Machine Embroidery: Ideas and Techniques, Batsford, 1992) is a contemporary embroidery artist with a talent for combining conventional fabrics and threads with such unconventional things as real flower petals, fabric paints, and rubber-stamp impressions. This is a book of ideas, not projects, full of color photographs of work by the author and others. Individual chapters cover use of real flowers, hand embroidery, applique and quilting, cross-stitch and canvas work, and machine embroidery. The photography is exceptionally good, with many detailed close-ups. A good selection for specialized craft collections.
